📓 We run the NYC Marathon this Sunday

Six days from now, we’re standing at the start of the NYC Marathon!

Back in September I told you Peloton asked us to run it with their team, and we said yes before the email even finished loading. Now it’s actually here, and the feelings are all over the place.

We feel good. The training has gone well, and the weather in Tennessee has been perfect for running lately. But if I’m honest, I keep wishing we had a few more weeks. More long runs. More of everything. Everyone tells you that’s normal the week of a marathon. It doesn’t make it feel any better!

So yes, we’re nervous. Please pray for us!

People apply for years and don’t get picked, and we got in. We’re still pinching ourselves. It’s such an honor, and I want to enjoy every mile of it, even the rough ones.

I also built my own Spotify playlist for race day. It’s finished, but Sara and I want more songs, and we’d love yours. What songs get you through things? A hard run, a bad week, a day you didn’t think you could finish.

We thought it would be fun to build the rest of it together, so we opened the playlist up for everyone to add their own music. Add them to our race-day playlist here. How to add a song: tap the link and it opens the playlist in Spotify. You’ll need a Spotify account, but a free one works. Tap “Add to this playlist,” search for your song, and hit the plus sign. Or find any song in Spotify, tap the three dots, choose “Add to playlist,” and pick ours. Anyone can add a song. The weirder, the better!

One more thing. Will any of you be in NYC for the race? If you are, we’d love to say hi!

P.S. If you’ve run a marathon, what’s the one thing you wish someone had told you the week before? Hit reply. We need all the help we can get!

We Went to Stockholm (And It Wasn't What We Expected)

We spent a few days eating our way through Stockholm: Swedish meatballs, fresh-fried herring from a little fish cart in Old Town, a proper Swedish hot dog, and a very committed fika. Then we walked into the Vasa Museum and weren't prepared for how massive it is. It's a warship that sank on its maiden voyage in 1628, sat at the bottom of the harbor for 333 years, and now sits almost completely intact.

👀 What Caught Our Eye

Tailwind Endurance Fuel

We've been drinking Tailwind on our long training runs. It's a powder you stir into your water, and one scoop gives you carbs and electrolytes together, so you're fueling and replacing salt without a pocket full of gels. If you're training for a long race, or just spending a long day outside, it's worth trying.

🚴 RAGBRAI 2027: 12 spots left!

Thirteen of you have already put down a deposit to ride across Iowa with us next July. You’re coming from Maine, Seattle, Reno, Colorado, Illinois, Oregon, Florida and right there in Iowa.

That leaves 12 spots. A $100 deposit holds yours, and the balance isn’t due until June. The price is $295 right now. When RAGBRAI announces the route in late January, it goes up to $349.

Everyone who rides with us gets a Matador duffel packed with Pelotan sunscreen and MoonPies for the road...(plus a lot more we just can't announce it yet:) No bike? Litespeed is loaning them out.

RAGBRAI registration opens November 15, and we’ll walk every rider through it that day.

💬 From the Replies

Last week we asked where you'd want to go if we could send you anywhere.

Kayleigh knew right away:

"It's got to be a camper van holiday across scotlands nc500 it's been a dream for years for us 3 ❤️"

Rick on the boat trip winner:

"For a brief moment I wished my name was Greg B, 🤣😂. Maybe next time!"

Diane spent last week in our hometown:

"Just finishing up an enjoyable week in your fair city. We're here for the bluegrass convention, but also experienced the Coker car museum and Raccoon Mountain Caverns - even stretched ourselves to do the Wild Cave crawl. Unfortunately didn't get to try any of your food recommendations. Maybe next year."

The Wild Cave crawl is no small thing, Diane. Come back for the food next year.

Carrie just joined us and wrote in from Tucson after watching the video of how we met:

"Love your initial video, wish I had not listened to people in my earlier life. My current self would have done what I wanted."

And Cindy is following along from Mississippi:

"Great Video……excited to follow you from Mississippi."

Keep them coming. We read every one.

Thanks for reading Field Notes. We're trying to make this a space worth saving, full of things we'd actually send to a friend.

If this made you want to go somewhere, forward it to the friend you'd go with. They can sign up here.

And if something in here made you laugh, think, or book a flight, we'd love to hear about it. Just hit reply or tag us @chrisandsara_ on Instagram.

Yesterday we ran the New York City Marathon, and we finished it!!!!! Sara and I sat up late last night trying to describe it to each other, and every attempt fell short. How do you explain a million people you’ve never met cheering for you like you’re family? Or crossing a bridge with thousands of runners and hearing nothing but feet? We’ve traveled to a lot of places and seen a lot of things, but we’ve never felt anything like that. It’s easily one of the top ten moments of our lives. A big...

Greg B., you won the boat! Back in August we asked if you wanted four nights on a Le Boat, and 629 of you threw your name in. When we drew the winner this month, it landed on Greg, who has been reading these emails since 2021, and we couldn't be happier that it went to someone who has been along for the ride that long. Greg, you've got four nights on your own boat in 2027. You can take it on the Rideau Canal in Ontario, the same canal we took ours on, or pick any Le Boat destination in Canada...

Canada Built a 146-Mile Bike Trail Where Every Stop is a Restaurant

Last week we flew home from Copenhagen, and somewhere over Iceland a woman behind us started shouting, "Help! Someone help me." I had my headphones on and a movie playing, and it took me a few seconds to realize the shouting wasn't coming from the movie. When I finally turned around, one of the flight attendants was bent over in the aisle, and on the floor next to her was a man who had just walked out of the bathroom and fainted. There's a particular kind of helpless you feel on a plane when...
